 The genre of romance. It is known to be filled with happy and bubbly feelings with a predictable end of some sort along with a tad bit of teary moments. It is a genre that touches the audiences sentimental side fast and had storylines that make hearts melt. The camera angles, movement, shots used in this genre of movies that make it what it is are its establishing shots, it always tends to be a relatable scene that sticks to the audience hard, shots like this allow the audience to get a feel of the ambiance and the characters emotions. Other types of angles, shots, and movement that are key to romance movies are 2 shots, this shot obtains two people and clearly shows how they feel. Then we have medium shots that are used to these are used in romantic comedies to show the characters body language and facial expressions. This can determine how the characters act around each other. and lastly the most used and needed are the close ups. These close ups signify the characters emotions, or the significance of an object which brings on a great deal of character to the movie and the storyline in itself. Important mis-en-scenes also take place such as the use of lighting, high key lighting shows the happy and romantic mood of the film. Costuming is also very a important mis-en-scene as it helps you understand a character. Acting also is a very important role as it depicts the storyline and situations presented . Editing in romantic movies mainly use two different types of editing techniques these are Straight Cuts and Cross Cuts. Cross Cuts are used to establish a certain action happening between two different locations. Straight Cuts are used to keep continuity in the story so it flow nicely. Furthermore I have noticed the pace of edition will be slow however subtle and significant changes do occur throughout the film. For example when the characters in the film start to fall in love with someone the pace of editing will start to increase (making the film feel a bit faster), this is show change. Romance movies often use non diegetic sounds to create a atmosphere for their audience, popular music will also take place in the soundtrack, sound in romantic movies are used to provoke emotion in audience. Some of the most classic romantic movies are How Harry Met Sally, The Notebook, Titanic. I personally love the emotional element of the romance film, the way a emotion can be understood through the scene based off of outs portrayal. However I do not personally like how the storylines are predictable most of the time.
