Generic Genre Research Horror

Horror, the genre meant to disturb, frighten, and scare the viewer yet create an enticing storyline. Horror will have you covering your eyes from the screen yet peaking from the cracks of your fingers to see what happens next. The camera angles, movement, and shots used in this genre that help create the feelings of anxiety include the dutch angle. The dutch angle tilts the camera to give the viewers a distorted and uneasy feeling, it contrasts from the rest of the movie which would be in a normal view and usually happens when a character has an uneasy revelation or before something bad is about to happen. Horror movies will often have point of view shots to show the point of view of the killer or victim showing a main point of the film or if they walk into a setting they will have a point of view shot to show what the main character is seeing and why they react differently in the next scene. This genre will also use tracking shots to track movement of running or crucial actions throughout the film, many tracking shots will be handheld to create more suspense. To create an uneasy feeling there will be plenty of closeups to make what is being shown on camera more dramatic and disturb the viewer with uncomfortable proximity. Common Mis-en-scene in horror would be clothes covered in blood, to show a messy unhinged and distraught wardrobe, Masks to hide the identity of someone and create a mysterious and curious view on the movie. The horror genre often uses makeup and special effects to create deeper eye-bags or a disturbing wound and gorey sight for the viewer, many movies create monsters through special effects completely distorting the humanity of the character. Horror films will often have dim, blue, flickering lights to create a gloomy, frightening setting. Often this genre will have abandoned areas or hospitals to frighten the viewer making them wonder if there is anyone else but the main character in the setting, and create suspicion as to what could be hiding in the dark. Usually characters in horror movies will act a little more comfortable to ignorant to the setting and actions happening around them, later to have knitted brows and shakey movements once the horror around them becomes known. Common editing in my genre would be if the shot transitions by fading to black, this creates suspense in the film. Action match also happens a lot to show what the character is doing and how their actions are affecting the setting or character. Diegetic sound is very common in horror, footsteps and breathing will be amplified to create suspense and disturb the viewer. Many popular horror movies include The exorcist, Saw, Jennifers body, and Scream. I personally love the special effects in horror movies and the visuals created within the story, they are one of a kind in this genre and create a grungy feel that is unmatched. Also the makeup and special effects in this genre are very believable and intriguing to look at. Yet, I really dont like some of the camera movements in horror, jump-scares and pop up horror films are often poorly done and most movies have an overused storyline where theres a hero in the end.
