Generic Genre Research Thriller

Thriller. The genre of the bone chilling and unexpected. The genre that keeps you on your feet. The camera angles, movement, shots used in this genre of movies that make it what it is are high angled/birds eye view are used in these films to to give the effect being looked down on, appearing to have a powerless and vulnerable look. Close-up shots are also used to show what the characters reactions are to whatever is happening in the film and how they are feeling at that moment, it is also used to capture detail closely in a scene that is important in the film. Tracking shots are used to make it look like one of the characters is being followed or being watched. It also helps the audience to have a full view of the scene and what is happening, but also helps to build suspense and tension as the audience does not know what could be shown next. Tilted angles are added to add dramatic tension to the scene, and sometimes signify a supernatural beings pushing or moving the camera. It is also used to act as though the camera is the character that is the victim looking up at the villain, and the audience are seeing what they are seeing. Long shots are also added to help show what something looks like and the atmosphere.  One of the last most important ones I will mention are the point of view shots these are used to show you what the character is seeing. This helps the audience to become emotionally attached and scared, as it feels like whatever happens to the character, is happening to the audience. There are many mis-en-scene features used in the thriller genre, one of which is low lighting, this lighting creates a suspenseful and mysterious tone, low lighting also creates shadows and tension within the audience. Normal costume take place to give a realistic view of the characters, however the makeup on woman mid way through the thrills on the movie happen to be messy or smudged to show signs of crying or distress, but the makeup is minimal with simple mascara and lipstick. The setting places tend to be more claustrophobic in order to show case the mental and physical entrapment of the characters that are the prey. Some of the most prominent editing that takes place in thriller films are jump cuts, they help show weakness and distortion within the situation. Shot reverse shots are also used to show the conversation that take place in a suspenseful way between 2 characters. Parallel editing also takes place to show what different characters are dealing with in the same time, this is shown a lot in thrillers. There is also a variety of slow and fast paces editing bases on the situation of the storyline. Sound in thriller films also vary. Thriller film consists of a lot of orchestral music to set the mood and tone, sometimes the music follows a heartbeat or pace of a situation. Non-Diegetic sounds are used to create uncertainty and apprehension. Some of the most classic known thrillers are " The Silence Of The Lambs", "American Psycho", and "Kill Bill". I love the mysterious vibe of this genre, each movie tends to be so different with similar elements. However, I do not like the often messy storylines and overall assemble of the films if they aren't done right.
